Russia should make clear its readiness to use nuclear weapons against countries that “support NATO’s attack on Ukraine,” according to an influential foreign policy “machinist” who is pressuring President Vladimir Putin to adopt against of the West a more categorical stance on nuclear. Sergei Karaganov said in an interview with the Kommersant newspaper that Moscow could launch a limited nuclear strike on a NATO country without provoking an all-out nuclear war. The United States, he added, is lying when it says it guarantees nuclear protection to its allies.
