Influenza vaccination result was very bad, says expert

The pulmonologist and researcher at Fiocruz, Margareth Dalcolmo, told the CNN this Friday (17) that the results of the vaccination campaign against Influenza were “far below what would be desirable”.

For Dalcolmo, this year there was a phenomenon opposite to that of last year. According to the researcher, in 2020, without the Covid-19 vaccine, many people went to vaccination posts to be immunized against the flu with the hope of also receiving protection against the coronavirus.

This year, with the immunizations against Covid-19 being applied, a large part of the public thought that it would no longer be necessary to be vaccinated against flu. “Many people did not get vaccinated and the result of the campaign for Influenza was very bad.”

The researcher reinforced the importance of immunization in combating both diseases. “The vaccine, if it doesn’t prevent contagion and the occurrence of disease, it certainly attenuates a lot the seriousness of the case. So being vaccinated is always a big advantage. And that applies to both situations,” he said.

Dalcolmo explained that flu symptoms last about five to six days, and that the main warning signs are discomfort with breathing, a high fever that does not go away, a cough that remains even with the use of medication and low oxygenation. The pulmonologist reinforced the importance of looking for a hospital if at least one of these signs is identified.

“Diagnostic differentiation is complex, because they are actually very similar. The ideal world would be to test everyone”, he stated.
