Only 37% of priority groups joined the flu immunization campaign in the capital of Rio de Janeiro in two months of the campaign. The low demand made the Municipal Health Department decide to expand vaccination against influenza to all cariocas over six months of age.
“It really is below what we expected. So we are giving the rest of the population the opportunity to get vaccinated against the flu. It is also a way to make the virus circulate less,” explained secretary Rodrigo Prado.
The extension to all age groups happens even before the recommendation of the Ministry of Health, which released the states and municipalities to expand the flu campaign to the entire population, while stocks of the immunizer last, from June 25th.
This Saturday (4), Rio de Janeiro promotes the D-Day of vaccination against influenza and measles, whose adherence is also below expectations. Children aged 6 months to 4 years should be vaccinated.
“Only 30% of the target audience has been to the gas stations so far. We ask parents to bring their children. Measles has been a disease that has been eradicated in Brazil for years, but we have seen an increase in cases,” warned Prado.
Around 450 vaccination sites were open until 5 pm. At Cidade das Artes, in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, a long queue formed.
The capital of Rio de Janeiro has also applied, since last Friday (3), the second booster dose against Covid-19 for the population aged 50 and over. In addition, it is important that everyone update their vaccination schedules. Children between 5 and 11 years old can receive both doses, adolescents and adults from 12 years old must have the booster dose.
