Initial claims for unemployment benefit rise more than expected to 206,000

The U.S. Department of Labor reported that Unemployment benefit claims increased by 18,000 in the week ended December 11 to 206,000, above the 195,000 of the market consensus. The advance is from the lowest level since 1969.

The Continued claims for unemployment benefits were reduced by 154,000 to 1,845,000, in the week ending December 4, reaching the lowest level since March 2020. The number was better than the 1,963,000 expected by average analyst estimates.

The dollar did not have significant changes after the data. Traders are focused on what the Federal Reserve left behind and on the news coming from the European Central Bank. Later on Thursday, US industrial production data and the preliminary PMI for December will be released.
