Inmet issues red alerts for climate extremes: suffocating heat in the Southeast and heavy rain in RS and SC

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a warning for climate extremes in Southeast region, which is experiencing a heat wave, and for the South region, with heavy rain forecast in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina .

Regions such as Vale do Itajaí, Greater Florianópolis, the South of Santa Catarina and the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre have chances of flooding and river overflows, as well as landslides, due to the accumulation of rain predicted for the area, being higher at 60mm/h.

Furthermore, areas of the Northwest, Northeast and Southwest of Rio Grande do Sul, and the West, South and North of Santa Catarina, are under storm warning, according to the Institute. For these regions, there is a forecast of rain between 30 and 60 mm/h, hail and intense winds that can vary between 60 and 100 km/h.

The Southeast portion of Rio Grande do Sul is under intense rain warning, with precipitation between 20 and 30 mm/h, with intense winds that can reach up to 60 km/h.

In the Southeast region of the country, areas such as Baixada Fluminense, in Rio de Janeiro, in addition to the city's metropolitan region are under heat wave danger alert. According to Inmet, the temperature should be 5°C above average for a period of 3 to 5 days.

This heat intensifies in cities such as São José do Rio Preto, Marília and Presidente Prudente, in the interior of São Paulo, in the Triângulo Mineiro region, in Minas Gerais, and in parts of Mato Grosso. In these places, the temperature is 5°C above average for a period longer than 5 days.

Other areas of the Brazilian Southeast, such as the cities of Campinas and Itapetininga, in São Paulo, the southern coast of São Paulo, and the South and Southwest of Minas Gerais, present a potential danger for the heat wave, with temperatures 5°C above average for period of 2 to 3 days.

Climatic causes

The rains that hit the Rio Grande do Sul region and the heat wave that affects the Southeast of Brazil can be explained by the “duel” between a strong mass of cold air and a hot one, which will keep the weather unstable and with precipitation in different areas of Rio Grande do Sul for the next few days.

The cold front that is in Rio Grande do Sul will not have the intensity to break the blockage of the hot air mass, and will be in a semi-stationary condition, causing rain in the north of Rio Grande do Sul and in part of Santa Catarina until this Saturday (4).

Due to the heavy rains that have hit Rio Grande do Sul since the beginning of the week, the 14 de Julho dam, in Serra Gaúcha, collapsed this Thursday afternoon (2) as reported by the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB).
