The National Institute for Space Research (INPE) released worrying data on fires in Brazil. From January 1 to August 26, 2024, 109,943 fire outbreaks were recorded across the country, an increase of 78% compared to the same period the previous year, when 61,720 cases were recorded.
Analysis by biome reveals an alarming scenario, with the Amazon being the most affected. The largest biome in the country concentrates almost half of the fire outbreaks, representing 47% of the total. Next comes the Cerrado with 32%, the Atlantic Forest with 10%, the Pantanal with 8% and the Caatinga with 3%. The Pampa, in the extreme south of the country, recorded only 0.3% of the cases.
Most affected states
The INPE study also presents a breakdown by state, highlighting the most critical regions. Mato Grosso leads the ranking with 21,694 occurrences, followed by Pará, with almost 15,000 cases. It is worth mentioning that the Pará government declared an environmental emergency on Tuesday (27), prohibiting the use of fire to clear land and pastures.
Amazonas comes in third place, with approximately 13,000 fire outbreaks. Mato Grosso do Sul and Tocantins complete the list of the five most affected states, with around 9,600 and 7,300 cases, respectively.
The significant increase in forest fires in 2024 raises concerns about the environmental impact and the effectiveness of conservation policies. Experts warn of the need for urgent measures to contain the spread of fires and protect Brazilian ecosystems, especially the Amazon, which plays a crucial role in global climate balance.
