The big bet for tourism this year, that is, to cover the huge losses left by the pandemic, but also arrivals and revenues to return to the size of 2019, seems to be achieved from the beginning of this season. It is recalled that in 2019 tourism brought revenues of over 18 billion euros and more than 30 million arrivals from abroad.
According to the statistics of the May bulletin published by the Institute of the Association of Greek Tourist Enterprises, in the period January-April, 1.8 million international air arrivals were recorded compared to 2.5 million in the period January-April 2019. From 1.8 million. Arrivals, the 1.1 million were recorded only in April, during which the decrease compared to 2019 – a milestone year for Greek tourism, before the pandemic -, was only 10.2% / – 125 thousand arrivals.
In particular, in the four months, at Athens International Airports there were 899 thousand international air arrivals, showing a decrease of -492 thousand/- 35.4%. It was followed by Thessaloniki airport with 371 thousand international air arrivals, showing a decrease of -141 thousand / 27.6%.
At the airport of Heraklion there was a decrease of 17 thousand /- 8.1% while the international air arrivals amounted to 188 thousand and at the airport of Chania 73 thousand arrivals were measured showing a decrease of 3 thousand /- 3.5%. At Rhodes airport 116 thousand international air arrivals showing an increase of 13 thousand / + 12.5% ​​and at Kos airport 33 thousand arrivals, with an increase of 1 thousand / + 3.3%. At Mykonos airport there was a decrease of 1 thousand /- 3.4% while international air arrivals amounted to 18 thousand while at Santorini airport 39 thousand arrivals were recorded with an increase of 11 thousand / 38.7%.
Corfu had 69 thousand international air arrivals and an increase of 6 thousand / 9.5%. Finally, in Aktio and Zakynthos, 12 thousand arrivals were recorded, showing an increase of 7 thousand /+ 153% and 2 thousand /+ 16.6% respectively.
The Cyclades are up
In total, all geographical units record an increase in the period January-April 2022, compared to the corresponding of 2019, with the exception of the geographical unit of Crete, where there was a decrease (-19 thousand / 6.9%) while 261 were recorded. thousand international air arrivals. International air arrivals at the airports of the Dodecanese amounted to 149 thousand compared to 135 in the corresponding period of 2019, recording an increase of 14 thousand / + 10.3%. In the Cyclades there were 56 thousand arrivals showing an increase of 10 thousand / + 22.0%. Finally, in the geographical unit of the Ionian Islands, an increase of 14 thousand /+ 16.0% was recorded, while 100 thousand international air arrivals were recorded.
But road arrivals are slow
Road arrivals in the opposite are currently lagging behind. According to the INSETE statistical bulletin, 902 thousand international road arrivals were recorded in the four months, compared to 2 million in the period January-April 2019, showing a decrease of 55.6% / – 1.1 million road arrivals. In April we had 320 thousand arrivals and a decrease of 51.8% / – 343 thousand road arrivals.
What do we expect in the critical part of revenues
The latest forecasts of entrepreneurs in the area speak of revenues close to 15 billion this year, which means that 80% of revenues in 2019 will have been achieved.
