“Inside Out 2” premiered in theaters in June this year and broke several records, such as becoming the highest grossing animation of all time . However, a scene with the characters Shame and Anxiety was left out of the Disney film.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the director Kelsey Mann explained that the scene would be called Shame Spiral and Riley, the protagonist, participates in a game of “Never Have I Ever” during hockey camp.
He mentions that he wanted to explore “the feeling that you’re not good enough, the feeling that you’re too hard on yourself” and that the scene would be near the end of the film.
“In this version, you’ll see Anxiety and Shame together. They’re kind of a pair in this one. And we were drawn to this idea of Riley’s shame spiraling out of control, causing a storm. There’s an element there that’s still in the final film, but instead of a shame spiral, we ended up making it really about Anxiety. It just simplified the movie and put the focus on one character,” he explains.
According to the portal, in the sketches of the deleted scene, Shame is presented as a woman with long, loose hair, which she hides behind. In addition, her hair becomes thinner and forms more of a curtain in front of her eyes as Riley’s sense of shame grows.
In the film, Shame was characterized by a gentle, pink giant who wants to hide and can hardly go unnoticed. He is also silent and uses a sweatshirt as a built-in hiding place.
In “Inside Out 2,” Riley experiences a spiral of anxiety and panic attack, rather than the deleted shame spiral. However, this occurs in a completely different context than the party scene.
