“Inside Out 2”: Screenwriter Reveals Which Emotions Were Cut From The Film

Sequel to Disney and Pixar’s hit animation, “Inside Out 2” brought four new emotions to the cinema screen (Anxiety, Shame, Envy and Boredom), in addition to the traditional Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust presented in the first film.

According to Meg LeFauve, screenwriter on the film, two emotions were still left out of the final script for “Inside Out 2”.

“I think emotionally, we really tried for a long time to have the emotions Humiliation and Guilt in the film”, revealed Meg in an interview with the North American portal Comic Book.

“We talked to a lot of experts about them. Shaming is not a good thing because it’s just about attacking you. Guilt is about taking responsibility and it’s a behavior, not who you are,” he added.

Meg then said that Humiliation and Guilt would still need more time to develop, which would go against a focus given to Anxiety.

“For this version, because we really needed to focus on Anxiety, it started to bifurcate the plot a lot. But I think we all have that self-loathing critic in our heads, like Humiliation, and we need to go a little bit further with the projections and how anxiety can start to do that to you. So I think it’s in the movie, but that was something we explored that ultimately we didn’t find fruitful for this version,” he concluded.

The film “Inside Out 2” became the highest grossing film of 2024 closing the weekend with US$ 724.4 million (around R$ 3.9 billion), according to data from Box Office Mojo. The animation surpassed “Dune: Part 2” which opened in theaters in February and grossed US$711.8 million (around R$3.8 billion).

In Brazil, the production had the biggest opening for an animation in the country, taking more than 4.5 million people to theaters.

The plot has a time jump in relation to the first film, and the protagonist, Riley, is now a teenager. As she matures, the young woman’s mind control room is also undergoing demolition to make way for new emotions.
