Inspection points to forced labor and involuntary hospitalization in a PE clinic

Prolonged psychiatric hospitalizations without any measure for socio-family reintegration, irregular conversion of voluntary hospitalizations into involuntary hospitalizations and prevention of contact between patients and family members. These were some of the irregularities identified by the Public Ministry of Pernambuco (MPPE) during an inspection at a psychiatric clinic in Igarassu, in Greater Recife.

Furthermore, forced labor was practiced under the pretext of “labor therapy”. The Pernambuco Civil Police is investigating the case.

The objective of the action was to verify the operating conditions of the unit and compliance with the legislation that governs psychiatric hospitalizations. The inspection was carried out on September 20th and the information was released on Wednesday (25th).

The inspection is part of the “Mental Health, don’t make it a big deal” Program, promoted by the Health Defense Operational Support Center (CAO Health).

Given the irregularities found, a police investigation was launched to investigate the cases.

Two patients have already given testimony about the illegality of their hospitalizations, and others will be heard by the authorities.

The action included the participation of several bodies, such as the Civil Police of Pernambuco (PCPE) and the Regional Council of Medicine (Cremepe).
