INSS suspends expert review of sickness aid after Covid-19 cases rise

The federal government decided to suspend the carrying out of medical examinations to review the INSS (National Social Security Institute) sickness benefit. According to an ordinance of the Ministry of Labor and Welfare, published in the Official Gazette of the Union, the decision comes after the new rise in cases of Covid-19 in Brazil.

The measure, which took effect on Wednesday (12), is “aimed at tackling the public health emergency of international importance arising from the coronavirus pandemic”, says the publication.

The decision does not apply to cases of joint efforts to carry out medical expertise that were already scheduled and with trips defined within the scope of the Undersecretariat of Federal Medical Expertise – SPMF.

Telemedicine pilot project for INSS expertise

This Thursday (13), the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Onyx Lorenzoni, and the president of the INSS, José Carlos Oliveira, signed an agreement to provide a pilot project to carry out remote medical expertise, through telemedicine.

The pilot project will last 90 days and will have 10 selected municipalities, which have a population between 10 and 15 thousand inhabitants and do not have on-site medical expertise. Residents of the chosen cities would have to travel to a neighboring municipality to carry out the medical evaluation. The proposal is that they can choose remote expertise.

Employees of the prefectures of these municipalities will contact the insured with an expertise scheduled in another location so that they can take the exam through telemedicine, if they want, at the premises of the prefecture itself.

The municipalities that signed the technical cooperation agreement to participate in the pilot project are: Francisco Morato (SP), Minas Novas (MG), Vassouras (RJ), Santo Augusto (RS), Olhos D’Água das Flores (AL), Corrente (PI), Pedro Gomes (MS), Ji Paraná (RO), Lábrea (AM) and Botas de Macaúbas (BA).

According to the federal government, the agreement between the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the INSS and the municipalities will be formalized with the publication of an ordinance in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU).
