The social network Instagram completely changes the approach to working with accounts of underage users. According to the newly announced rules, now any teenager under the age of 16 (or under the age of 18 in certain countries) after registration will receive an account with activated private mode by default. The option to switch to a public profile will still remain, but everyone who wishes to remain public will be sent a special notification urging them to make it personal, that is, closed from outsiders.
As explained by Karina Newton, who is responsible for Instagram’s privacy policy, the decision is due to the potential impact of problematic adult users. Currently, the company is able to quickly identify them, therefore, in order to eliminate suspicious behavior, they will also not be displayed anywhere in adolescents. Accounts under 16-18 years old will not see content in the search section, in the Reels tab, and in the recommendations. Commenting on children’s publications will also become impossible for adults, as well as viewing comments from minors.
Facebook is also making changes to its ad platform due to the restrictions presented. Now advertisers will be able to target users under 18 only based on their age, gender and location – this applies to both Instagram and Facebook and Facebook Messenger. Previously, any user could target, among other things, interests and activity, which are based on the history of the websites viewed and actions on them and the use of third-party applications as part of general tracking.
