Instagram news, more checks on the age of users

It is forbidden to lie to Instagram: the social network will carry out more accurate checks to identify what is declared by the subscribers. In fact, after the release of some features to avoid abuse and new tools to allow parents to supervise their children’s accounts, it is Meta to announce the debut – in Italy and in Europe – of new options to check the age of users in order to propose experiences similar to their age.

Those who will change their date of birth in the Instagram account settings by bringing it from the age of under 18 to age 18 or overwill have to prove what they have declared by choosing two different methods: by uploading an identity document valid or by recording a selfie video.

Thanks to the collaboration with Yoti, a company specialized in online age verification, it will be possible to make an estimate without identifying or recognizing the person concerned. Subscribers who choose this second option will have to follow the instructions that will appear on the screen and then share an image with the company concerned: at the end, Meta and Yoti will delete the image. This method, therefore, would be effective for carrying out a check even for those who do not always have access to identity documents, as often happens with adolescents. As for the documents sent, such as an identity card or driving license, they will be securely stored on Meta ed’s servers deleted within 30 days.

“Our Facial Age Estimate is a privacy-friendly solution we built it precisely to give everyone a safe way to prove your age without having to share your name or identity document. Technology can allow minors to access age-appropriate content while protecting people’s privacy. Today’s announcement is another step in the right direction to create safer online environments, ”he said Julie Dawson, Chief Policy and Regulatory Officer of Yoti.

In addition to the news for age verification, artificial intelligence comes to the rescue once again, which will help to understand whether users are teenagers or adults: in this way, for example, some functions can be limited, such as preventing teenagers from accessing to Facebook Dating or to adults to send them messages.
