Instagram is introducing a new policy restricting interactions between teens and adults to make its platform safer for younger users. Now in the application it is forbidden for an adult to send messages to teens if they are not following him. Also, young users will be shown “security hints” if they send a message to an adult who is “exhibiting potentially suspicious behavior.”
Security hints will give teen users the option to report or block adults sending them messages. Prompts will remind young users not to give in to adult pressure and to “be careful when sharing photos, videos, or information with someone” they don’t know.
Notifications will appear when Instagram’s moderation systems detect suspicious behavior from adult users. The company does not share details on how these systems work, but states that such behavior may include sending “a large number of friend requests or messages to people under the age of 18.” Instagram, owned by Facebook, says the feature will be available in select countries this month (not specified which) and “soon” around the world.

Instagram also says it is developing new “artificial intelligence and machine learning technology” to determine the age of a person when registering an account. Officially, the app requires users to be 13 or older, but it’s easy to lie about your age. The company said it wants to put in “more effort to prevent this from happening,” but did not go into details about how new machine learning systems can help solve this problem.

New teen users who sign up to Instagram will now also be prompted to make their profile private. If they decide to create a public account anyway, Instagram will send them a notification later, “highlighting the benefits of a private account and reminding them to check their settings.”
