Instagram, ready for change?

Adam Mosseri, right arm of Mark Zuckerberg and head of Instagram, he has been very active in recent months with the announcements on his personal profile. The most important of the recent ones is the changing the graphics of the main newsfeed of the social network. That is to say that from the beginning of May, and progressively more and more extensively, the layout of the screen where we are offered the contents of who we follow (and who we could follow, this is a novelty) will be very different from the current one: photos and videos, especially videos, , in 9:16. According to an approach that recalls, without surprises, that of TikTok. Who knows if the Instagram community will appreciate.

The news was distributed to a small number of users, and therefore they are still in the testing phase, even if the design now seems decided and except for small adjustments that will in all likelihood be the fate that sooner or later – in all likelihood in the summer period – will touch all users on a global scale. Unless the numbers and feedback from the experimental phase are really disheartening.

What will change, indeed what could change for everyone in the short term? The photographs, on the other hand like the videos, will no longer be displayed in the traditional square format, and will therefore appear in full screen with only the navigation commands distributed at the top and bottom. Consequently captions and other elements (to understand: the icons of the heart, of the messages, of the comments and the count of likes and comments) will partially overlap the shots. Again: the contents will be scrolled down no longer in a fluid and continuous way as it happens now but with “clicks” that signal the passage from one post to another, again in TikTok style (or, if you prefer, Reel). Also new for it scrolling of carouselsthat is, collections of multiple photos.

Some details still remain to be clarified, for example how the stories will be displayed that in theory, according to what some managers of the platform used by over two billion monthly users have declared, should remain where they are, that is, in the circles at the top. Just as it will be necessary to understand if the eventual implementation of the new layout will be mandatory for everyone or, so to speak, by choice. The risk, as many point out, is disappoint a very loyal part of users to the clear separation between photos, videos, stories and other sections in favor of a chaotic Far West that perhaps comes closest to the user of teenagers. But that, in fact, could leave older Millennials on the street who, since 2010, twelve years ago, have made it their platform of choice. With social media, games are never perfect: every change satisfies some sensitivities and displeases others.
