Instagram star accused of stealing $ 2.5 million worth of BTC from his followers

An Instagram user under the pseudonym Jay Mazini was accused by the US Department of Justice of defrauding his 1 million followers and embezzling $ 2.5 million worth of bitcoins.

In court documents, the defendant goes by the name Jebara Igbara and is accused of extorting bitcoins from his subscribers. He offered to buy BTC from subscribers at a 3.5% -5% overpriced price, but he never transferred funds to them himself.

In total, Igbar received $ 2.5 million worth of bitcoins, although the investigation is still ongoing. Bank statements show that the “Instagram star” simply did not have the funds to pay out to users. In at least one case, bank transfer receipts have been proven to be counterfeit.

For example, on January 7, 2021, Igbara promised one of his subscribers $ 195,700 for 5,049 BTC. And when the user asked about the bank receipt, the fraudster replied, “Of course, I’ll send it to you.” However, after sending the bitcoins, the scammer’s victim never received the wire transfer.

“At the moment, Igbara is only a suspect and, until the charges are proven in court, should be considered innocent. If he is found guilty, he faces up to 20 years in prison, ”the law enforcement agency said in a statement.

Recall that recently in the United States were arrested six residents of New Hampshire on charges of organizing an illegal cryptocurrency exchange. The turnover of funds laundered by cybercriminals exceeded $ 10 million.
