Instagram will use Artificial Intelligence to verify the age of users in Brazil

Instagram announced on Thursday that it will expand user age verification tests to other countries, including India and Brazil. Currently, the platform requires a minimum age of 13 to register.

Since 2019, Instagram has asked new users to share their age to complete the registration on the social network. The measure aims to ensure that teenagers and adults enjoy the experience appropriate to their age group.

The platform has partnered with Yoti, a company specializing in online age verification and Artificial Intelligence (AI), to ensure user privacy.

If anyone under the age of 18 tries to edit their birth date on Instagram to age 18 or older, the platform will require age verification with one of the options below:

ID document upload

The user can upload an official identification document, such as the National Driver’s License (CNH) or General Registry (RG). The document will be stored on the social network servers and deleted after 30 days.

video selfie

When choosing this option, the person will see instructions to follow on the screen. The video selfie will only be shared with Yoti. The company, in turn, makes an age estimate based on the user’s facial features.

friend confirmation

With this option, you can ask mutual friends to confirm someone’s age. The person making the confirmation must be at least 18 years old. In addition, she will not be able to confirm to anyone else at that time and will need to comply with other protective measures implemented by Instagram.

Instagram also said that if users are identified as teenagers, their accounts will be private by default. In addition, unwanted adult contact and ad display options will be limited.
