Institute recognizes initiatives against hunger and food waste in Brazil

The second edition of the Pacto Contra a Fome Award was held this Tuesday morning (3), at Teatro Paulo Autran, at SESC Pinheiros, in São Paulo. Organized by the Instituto Pacto Contra a Fome, the event highlighted impactful initiatives aimed at combating hunger and reducing food waste in Brazil.

With the support of four United Nations agencies — UNESCO, FAO, WFP and UNEP —, the award reinforced the importance of concrete actions to transform the country’s food reality.

Six projects were awarded, receiving R$100,000 each, in recognition of the work carried out in two main categories: Promotion of Food Security and Reduction or Reversal of Food Waste.

The co-founder and president of the Pact Against Hunger Council and CNN columnist, Geyze Diniz, highlighted the progress made in 2023 and reinforced the movement’s ambitious goals.

“Last year, we launched the Pact Against Hunger. It is a civil society movement to combat hunger and seek to avoid food waste. We have two important goals: by 2030, no hungry people, and by 2040, all these people well fed. The idea is aligned with government goals. Therefore, as important as idealizing, is carrying out”, he stated.

The recognized initiatives were identified as fundamental to facing the challenges of hunger and building a more sustainable model of use and reuse of food resources in Brazil.

To achieve these goals, the Pact Against Hunger structured its actions into four main axes: socioeconomic inclusion, strengthening management and governance in public policies, expanding access to food for the population and the transition to more sustainable food systems.

In its first year, the movement carried out important interventions in three states: Ceará, Maranhão and Pará. “All the work was developed together with governments and civil society”, highlighted Geyze, reinforcing the relevance of partnerships to promote food security in a sustainable way. structural and permanent.
