Insurers received about 700 claims for compensation after rains in Petrópolis

About 700 claims for compensation reached the insurance companies after the tragedy caused by the rains in Petrópolis, which caused more than 130 deaths in the city. The data are from the Union of Insurance Companies of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo.

The companies reinforced the 24-hour assistance teams to assist policyholders who had their goods damaged by the rains. The measure applies to auto, residential, commercial risks and life insurance policies.

The president of the Union of Insurance Companies of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo, Antônio Carlos Costa, declared that it is necessary to focus on helping people who have suffered losses and damages.

“The most important thing now is to guarantee speed and safety in customer service, as a way of minimizing losses”, he said.

During the rains last Tuesday (16), dozens of vehicles were washed away or damaged in garages and dealerships. Scenes of trailers pulling cars from rivers or flooded subsoils became common throughout the week.

Only the Petrópolis City Hall, so far, has removed 221 vehicles from the streets. The towed cars were taken to the Morin’s yard. According to the city hall, all the cars were cataloged to enable identification and removal by the owner.

For the operation, 35 trailers and four winches were used. The removal of vehicles has been carried out since Wednesday (16). The CEO of CPTrans, Jamil Sabrá, reiterated that the owners who have the car towed will not have any expenses.

“Let it be clear that no fee will be charged to the owner, a fee for the service or for the use of the patio. Not even a fine”, says the CEO.

Porto Seguro, on the other hand, created an action called Porto Socorro, which has already rescued more than 500 vehicles, both from customers and non-customers, working together with the Civil Defense and the Fire Department. The company points out that part of these vehicles were removed from within rivers, under rubble and flooded subsoils.

According to Porto Seguro, there is no deadline for the operation to end nor a limit on the number of vehicles rescued. In addition, professionals are offering other types of help, such as distributing donations, removing rubble and general assistance to the population.
