Intel introduced new processors: hybrid architecture, 10 nm, DDR5 and adequate price

Yesterday, October 27, Intel employees officially presented the new 12th generation Core processors (Alder Lake), which will go on sale on November 4 this year along with new motherboards based on the Z690 chipset from partner companies. It should be noted that at a closed presentation the company announced only six desktop processors – i9-12900K, i7-12700K and i5-12600K, as well as similar versions, but without an integrated graphics core. Younger models based on the new hardware platform will be presented a little later, and on the flagships, the “team of blue” decided to show all the power of the new architecture.

The fact is that the new Intel processors are built on a hybrid architecture that resembles the big.LITTLE solution from ARM – all representatives of the 12th generation are built on a combination of productive cores marked “P” (Performance) and energy efficient cores marked “E” ( Efficient), which are located on one crystal. The former are responsible for single-threaded and low-threaded processes, providing a performance gain of 19% compared to Rocket Lake, while the latter type of cores is responsible for scaling multi-threaded workloads. In addition, Thread Director technology was introduced to ensure efficient operation of the new architecture.

This development allows you to efficiently distribute the load between the cores – for this, the Thread Director analyzes threads in real time, and then distributes them between the types of cores for maximum performance or minimum power consumption. At the presentation, Intel showed how it works – in the game Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord, the flagship i9-12900K showed 19% more frames than the i9-11900K, and if you also start streaming content, the difference is already 84%. In all other scenarios that use multithreading, performance has also increased – this applies to photo and video editing, 3D modeling, various calculations, benchmarks, and so on. Unfortunately, Thread Director will only work fully on Windows 11.

New generation processors are produced on a 10-nanometer process technology (the company calls it Intel 7), support for DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 has appeared. And, best of all, despite many rumors and leaks, the cost of flagship models based on Alder Lake turned out to be quite adequate – the top-end Core i9-12900K processor costs only $ 589 ($ 564 without integrated graphics), and i5-12600KF are given for $ 264 – this is about 18 thousand rubles.
