Intel is going to make chips for smartphones. Not my own, but for MediaTek

Intel has announced the first major partnership with MediaTek, which involves the foundry of the American giant. MediaTek is known for developing chipsets for Arm-based smartphones, as well as chips for other devices. This cooperation will allow the Taiwanese company to achieve more stable supply of its products around the world, especially in the US and Europe. In the future, it is expected that the number of devices using MediaTek chips will be significantly increased.

Last year, as part of a new strategy, Intel launched the Foundry Services (IFS) initiative, under which it opens up its manufacturing facilities to other companies. MediaTek was one of the first to join this initiative, so Intel will be able to release not only x86 processors, but Arm.

“We have the right mix of advanced technology and global capacity to help MediaTek produce the chips for the next billion connected devices,” said IFS President Randhir Thakur.

Intel continues to make major investments to strengthen its foundry. The company recently completed its Oregon facility expansion and announced a $20 billion investment to build another facility in Licking County, Ohio. In addition, in Europe, Intel will spend more than $36 billion to expand existing facilities and build new factories. And all this in order to become a powerful production center not only for our own processors, but also for our partners. At the same time, Intel will not only produce chips for other companies, but also outsource the production of certain chips. This should provide a more open and flexible ecosystem.

This is not the first time Intel and MediaTek have collaborated with each other. Both companies have been making 5G modems for computers for a long time.
