Just two days ago, Intel introduced the new Xeon Ice Lake-SP server processors, and details about the next generation have already appeared on the Web.
The current generation is the third for the Xeon Scalable, but the fourth on paper looks more impressive on all fronts. At the same time, it is not yet clear whether the CPUs will compete directly.
So, the new generation is called Sapphire Rapids-SP. Unlike Ice Lake-SP, the new items will be designed for use in four- and eight-socket configurations. At the same time, the 10-nanometer process technology will remain, but it will be better – 10 nm Enhanced SuperFin. Alder Lake processors will have the same process technology. The architecture is not specified in the new document, but there was previously evidence of Willow Cove, which underlies Tiger Lake.
The new generation, as you can see, will be able to boast a maximum number of cores increased to 56, support for DDR5, support for HBM memory, PCIe 5.0 interface, and also HEDT desktop CPUs – Sapphire Rapids-X – will also be released within this generation.
