Mobileye, a unit of Intel, plans to build and launch autonomous electric buses together with its US partners in 2024, executives told Reuters.
The move would be an attempt to expand its automated driving system beyond taxis and delivery vehicles.
Mobileye, Benteler EV Systems and Beep will launch the on-demand buses, with 12 to 14 seats each and will have no steering wheel or pedal.
The vehicles will be operated in “confined georeferenced areas” where speed limits are around 56.3 kilometers per hour, said Hinrich Woebcken, an advisory board member at Beep, a mobility services provider.
Mobileye plans to launch autonomous taxis in Israel and Germany by the end of this year, but is still pending regulatory approvals. The company is also working with Silicon Valley startup Udelv to put automated electric delivery vehicles on U.S. streets by 2023.
Mobileye wants to prove to US regulators that its autonomous driving system would be safer than a human driver, said Johann Jungwirth, Mobileye’s vice president of mobility as a service (MaaS).
Executives said the buses will help save on driver costs, address labor shortages, and solve problems such as gas emissions and congestion.
