Intel Unveils Bitcoin Mining Chip and 3600W Miner

Intel introduced the Bonanza Mine chip for bitcoin mining and a 3600W miner, but judging by the specification presented at the ISSCC conference, the device was not effective.

According to Tom’s Hardware, the Intel BMZ1 chips are 7 x 7.5 mm FCLGA chips with 132 pins. At the same time, the dimensions of the chip itself are only 4.14 x 3.42 mm, which makes it possible to produce up to 4,000 chips on a single wafer. The chips are built on a 7 nm process technology and have 258 mining cores each, operating at a frequency of 1.35 GHz to 1.6 GHz. They consume about 7.5 watts and provide a hash rate of 137 Gh / s. Thus, the efficiency of the chips is about 55 J/Tx.

Simultaneously with the presentation of the chips, Intel also introduced its own bitcoin mining device with 300 BNZ1 chips. The device consumes 3,600 watts of power at a hash rate of 40 Tx/s. For comparison, the water-cooled Antminer S19 Pro + Hyd miner introduced in mid-January consumes 5,445 W at a hashrate of 198 Tx / s. Its efficiency reaches 27.5 J per terahash, which is exactly twice as efficient as the Intel BNZ1 chips.

It is not yet known whether Intel will supply BNZ1 chips for self-produced ASIC miners by customers, or whether it will supply them with already assembled devices. However, the accompanying documentation has instructions for using the BNZ1 chips in your own systems.

During the presentation, Intel representatives emphasized that the development of the second generation of mining chips is already underway, which should “surprise everyone” with their technical characteristics. Earlier, Intel CEO Patrick Gelsinger talked about the extreme energy efficiency of chips. Perhaps he was referring specifically to the second generation of BNZ chips.
