Intense cold in Rio Grande do Sul could cause frost this week

After the extreme storms that hit Rio Grande do Sul over the weekend, the state should have a week of firmer weather, with less rain. However, the concern now is the arrival of an intense polar cold wave.

The mass of dry and cold air that is pushing the rain clouds is expected to leave the sky clear on Tuesday (14), but with extremely low temperatures. The minimum temperatures can reach 4°C in cities such as Pelotas and Uruguaiana, while in Caxias do Sul and Porto Alegre the minimum temperatures will be between 6°C and 9°C.

However, the thermal sensation, that is, the temperature felt on the skin, can be even lower, reaching 0°C in some regions. This means there is a risk of frost, with the fields dawning white in cities close to the border with Uruguay.

Risk of frost extends

The risk of frost is not just limited to Rio Grande do Sul. Between Tuesday and Wednesday (15), the forecast is that the phenomenon will also affect regions of Santa Catarina and Paraná.

This intense cold wave comes at a delicate time for Rio Grande do Sul, which is still dealing with the consequences of flooding caused by the weekend's storms. While in other times frost could be seen as a beautiful phenomenon, in this scenario it becomes yet another complication for the already hard-hit population.
