Interest rate hike depends on inflation projections in September, says Lagarde

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said on Thursday that if the bank’s September inflation projections indicate a 2024 price growth pace of 2.1% or more, the bank will raise interest rates by more than 0.25 percentage point.

“We must maintain the course and the determination to contain inflation,” Lagarde told reporters in Amsterdam after the bank’s monetary policy meeting.

Investors are expecting the ECB to join the Federal Reserve and a few other major central banks in raising their interest rates by 50 points in one go at some point — a larger increment than has been usual since the global financial crisis. .

Money market pricing suggests that the ECB will raise interest rates by 0.75 point in total at the next two meetings, implying at least an increase of more than 0.25 percentage point.
