Five new PPP projects with a total investment cost of 1.5 billion euros were approved today by the Interministerial PPP Committee, chaired by the Deputy Minister of Development & Investment Mr. Nikos Papathanasis.
The Interministerial Committee was attended by the Minister of Finance Mr. Christos Staikouras, the Minister of Development & Investment Mr. Adonis Georgiadis, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Mr. Costas Karamanlis, the Minister of Environment and Energy Mr. Costas Skrofos and the Minister of Development Anftis. George Georgantas, the Minister of State responsible for the Coordination of Government Work Mr. Akis Skertsos, the Deputy Minister of Finance Mr. Theodoros Skylakakis and the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Mr. George Karagiannis.
Also present at the teleconference were the General Secretary of Private Investments and PPPs Mr. Orestis Kavalakis, the General Secretary of Fiscal Policy Mr. Thanos Petralias and the General Secretary of Rural Development and Food Mr. Dimitris Papagianidis.
In more detail:
A. “Vertical Axis Drama – Amfipoli (Paleokomi) with S.D.I.T.”
The project, with a total length of about 43 kilometers, concerns the upgrade of the existing road Drama – Amfipolis (Paleokomi) to a highway and the construction of a new alignment along the sections: a) Paleokomi – Mavrolevki and b) Mavrolevki – Drama. The construction of a modern highway will reduce travel time and transportation costs and will improve the safety of permanent residents and visitors. At the same time, the safety of the road infrastructure of Central Macedonia is significantly improved.
b. “Study, construction, financing of the upgrade of the EO2 road axis (Montenegro – Edessa, Giannitsa Bypass, Chalkidona Bypass) and operation / maintenance of the Axios river – Edessa bridge section”
This is the upgrade of the road axis EO2 Thessaloniki – Edessa in the bridge section of the Axios river – Edessa and more specifically of the subdivisions Mavrovouni – Edessa, bypass of Giannitsa, bypass of Chalkidona. This PPP is expected to improve competitiveness and enhance export-oriented extroversion. At the same time, an adequate, fast and safe connection is achieved with the main road axis of the Egnatia Odos, while access to the Thessaloniki International Airport is facilitated, as well as to small regional airports.
c. “Construction of Enipeas Farsala river dam (Palioderli site) of water distribution networks and other accompanying projects”
The Partnership concerns the construction, financing, maintenance and operation of the construction project of the Enipeas Farsala River Dam, water distribution networks and other accompanying projects. The aim is the proper management of water resources, the optimization of existing irrigation methods and the containment of the rural population of the area. This Partnership addresses the problem of access of the settlements of the area to good quality drinking water and upgrades the offered agricultural product. At the same time, the country is in line with existing Community water legislation.
d. “Projects for the utilization of the water potential of the Tavronitis river in the Prefecture of Chania, Crete”
The Partnership concerns the design, construction, financing, maintenance and operation of the Derianos Dam and the Semproniotis Dam, the connection tunnel of the two reservoirs, the water transfer and distribution works of the new reservoirs for the irrigation of cultivated areas of the Municipalities. .Ε. Chania and the water treatment and transfer works of the reservoir of the Derianos dam for the enhancement of the water supply of the above Municipalities. This PPP includes the effects of climate change on water planning and management by improving the level of flood protection while upgrading the offered agricultural product and addressing the problem of residents’ access to good quality water.
e. “Transport and distribution of water from the river Nestos in the plain of Xanthi for irrigation purposes with PPP”
The project concerns the study, financing, construction, maintenance and operation of the basic infrastructure for transport and distribution of water from the river Nesto in the Eastern plain of Xanthi and in particular in an area of about 56 thousand acres, where the most serious salinization problems are observed. Agriculture is the main economic activity of the population of Xanthi and farmers constitute 1/3 of the workforce of the Prefecture. The Partnership is expected to have a positive impact on the agricultural development of the region by reducing the risks of increased groundwater abstraction as well as losses with the introduction of advanced irrigation systems and practices in the agricultural sector. The construction of a network that will use and distribute more surface water will reduce the demand for groundwater resources that are vulnerable to agrochemical contamination and seawater infiltration.

Also, the construction of the Enipeas River Dam in Farsala, the utilization of the water potential of the Tavronitis River in Chania and the construction of a water transmission and distribution network from the Nestos River in the Xanthi plain for irrigation purposes, will contribute to the upgrading of agricultural production. fortifying natural water resources while reducing the effects of climate change.
