International anti-jihad operation in Burkina Faso: Dozens of ‘terrorists’ killed

Dozens of “terrorists” were killed, 300 “suspects” were arrested and their bases destroyed last week in a joint operation between Burkina Faso, C Εte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Togo between November 21-27.

Burkina Faso Security Minister Maxime Kone said today that a total of 5,728 soldiers from all four countries took part in Operation Gundalgu 4 against the jihadists, with 881 vehicles and six aircraft.

He said that during the operation, 300 suspects were arrested, many of them wanted, 53 firearms and large quantities of ammunition were seized, as well as 144 vehicles and “significant quantities of drugs” in all four countries. In Burkina Faso, five “terrorist bases” were destroyed and 30 suspects were “neutralized” in clashes on the border with Ivory Coast.

“The climate of insecurity due to cross-border crime, smuggling of all kinds, armed robberies, kidnappings and killings” led the four countries to decide to set up this joint venture, “the minister added.

Between 2018-19, three more operations were carried out, but they were transnational, of smaller scope, mainly in the areas where terrorist organizations such as Boko Haram, the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (GSIM) and the Islamic State in Greater Sahara (EIGS) were active. , reminded Kone.

Burkina Faso, a poor country in West Africa, has been facing increasingly deadly attacks by jihadist groups since 2015. On November 21, at least nine police officers and about ten civilians were killed in an attack on jihadists in Fube. On November 14, at least 57 people were massacred in Inata, in the north of the country.
