The international armored vehicle manufacturer IAG has started direct investments in the Bulgarian defense industry, the Bulgarian news agency BTA reports. According to the telegram of the Bulgarian agency, the International Armored Group (IAG) is investing in a facility where the mandatory tests for compliance with NATO quality and reliability standards will be carried out, the company announced today.
As it is also mentioned, IAG noted that it has fulfilled its obligations as a subcontractor of the Bulgarian Samel-90, which signed a contract in 2020 for the supply of armored vehicles for the Special Operations Forces. The first 45 vehicles are already in Bulgaria after IAG managed to build them on schedule, despite the Covid-19 crisis, it added.
According to the BTA telegram, in 2021 Bulgaria joined the countries where certification and compliance tests of armored vehicles can be carried out according to NATO standards. This became possible after IAG was authorized by the Dutch international laboratory TNO to participate in such tests.
IAG founder and owner Anton Stefov, a Bulgarian who worked in Canada for many years, chose the Zmejovo Artillery Technical Testing Center as the site for the tests, which included explosions. Some armored vehicles have already been successfully tested and certified there, the BTA telegram said. Stefov’s decision to invest in a test field of the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense is part of his vision for direct investment in his homeland, the IAG added.
