International Immigration Organization: At least 8,938 people died on migratory routes in 2024

A record number of at least 8,938 people died on immigration paths around the world in 2024, the UN said today, stressing that the real account is “probably much higher” because many dead are not recorded. “The growing number of dead immigrants around the world is a tragedy that is unacceptable and which we can avoid,” commented Deputy General Manager of the International Organization for Migration (DOM/IOM), Ugocsi Daniels in a statement. According to data gathered by the UN service, at least 8,938 people died on migration routes around the world in 2024 “something that makes this year with the most deaths ever recorded”.
