The International Judo Federation (IJF) suspended, this Sunday (27), the post of honorary president of the organization of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, due to the invasion of Ukraine.
A black belt in judo, Putin, 69, is an assiduous practitioner of the sport and co-author of a book entitled “Judo: History, Theory, Practice”.
“In light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the International Judo Federation announces the suspension of Vladimir Putin’s status as Honorary President and Ambassador,” the IJF said in a statement.
The IJF said on Friday (25) that it had canceled an event that was due to take place from May 20 to 22 in Russia.
“The International Judo Federation regretfully announces the cancellation of the 2022 Grand Slam in Kazan, Russia,” said Federation President Marius Vizer.

The escalation in the years-long conflict between Russia and Ukraine has set off the continent’s biggest security crisis since the Cold War, raising the specter of a dangerous confrontation between Western powers and Moscow.
