International Nurses Day: “Everywhere for the good of all”

“Everywhere for the good of all” is the slogan of the National Federation of Nursing Professions Orders for International Nurse Day, but also for a congress that this year is itinerant in the area. The common thread is the activity of proximity nurses. Even the Recovery Plan it aims for territorial medicine with fewer family doctors and more nurses.

The first was called Florence Nightingale and her name went down in history because it was she who invented a profession: nurse.

Born May 12, 1820 in Florence, daughter of an English scholar and exponent of the rich British bourgeoisie, during the war of Crimea, became the lady of the lamp, the guardian angel of the wounded soldiers.

She is universally recognized as the founder of modern nursing, not one snacks, as some considered women in the hospital, but a woman of science in the service of medicine.

The precepts of Florence Nightingale are the guidelines still followed today in patient care by every nurse. She created the Nightingale Training School with his Notes on Nursing. She was the first female member of the Royal Statistical Society, contributed to the birth of English social services and inspired Henry Dunant in the creation of the International Red Cross.

In Italy there are over 450 thousand nurses. There are 5.8 for every thousand inhabitants, a number that is below the OECD average of 8.8. They were the first to tell what was happening in the hospitals of our country, in intensive care, including oxygen cylinders and containment suits, masks, visors, gloves, shoe covers. Their images have become a symbol of the fight against the pandemic and their commitment has led them to be officially candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize 2021.
