The international reactions of the United Nations, heads of state and organizations were immediate for the sentencing in Russia of the American journalist Evan Gershkovich, to 16 years in prison after a trial that was quickly conducted behind closed doors. The Wall Street Journal, where Gershkowitz worked, spoke of an “outrageous” sentencing and “it comes while Evan has spent 478 days in prison, unjustly imprisoned, away from his family and friends (…) all because he was doing his job as a journalist,” newspaper officials said in a statement. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) also described the Russian court’s decision as scandalous. “Journalists are not pawns in geopolitical games.
