International Space Station Alarm: Smoke and Smell Detected in Russian Section

Smoke and the smell of burnt plastic were detected in its Russian part International Space Station, the Russian space agency Roscosmos announced, assuring that the crew is safe and that the planned exit into space remains.

“All systems are operating normally and the crew continues to be trained normally to go into space” this afternoon.

The latest incident, the latest in a series of similar incidents, comes as the Russian space company in charge of maintaining the Russian section of the International Space Station announced in late August that it was in a state of disarray with 80% of its flight systems in end of their lives.

Two cosmonauts, Oleg Nowitzki and Peter Dubrov, are expected to leave today to continue the work of integrating the Russian scientific vessel Nauka, which arrived at the ISS in late July, after 15 years of delays and technical problems.

The Russian space industry has faced a variety of problems in recent years, from failed launches to corruption scandals. However, it continues its ambitious plans to build a Russian space station and base on the Moon along with China.

Cooperation with the United States is declining due to international bilateral tensions.
