International tension and pandemic surround the Winter Olympics in China

The 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing entered its first week of competitions after a grand opening ceremony held last Friday (4) at the Bird’s Nest stadium, despite the reduced audience, restricted to guests, due to restriction measures imposed by the fight against Covid-19. Until the next 20th, more than 3 thousand athletes compete for medals in 15 modalities, with 11 Brazilian representatives among the participants.

But the sporting mega-event comes amid an escalation of tension between the United States and Russia over the threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. China is one of the most important allies of the Russian government and maintains a political and economic dispute with the Americans for prominence in the international arena.
