A couple of Bulgarians wanted for a case infant marketing in Greece, was arrested in Germany and will be extradited soon, the Sofia prosecutor’s office announced today.
The two suspects have been the subject of a European arrest warrant since February for “alleged involvement in a criminal gang organized for trafficking infants on Greek soil”, according to the statement.
The couple, whose son is already in custody in Bulgaria, were arrested on April 29 in Neukirsen (southwest). The prosecution did not elaborate on the reasons for their stay in Germany.
All three face between five and 15 years in prison.
They are accused of having recruited pregnant women from a poor environment in Bulgaria since 2015, promising to pay them between 5,000 and 7,000 leva (2,500 to 3,500 euros). They were then driven and lived in an apartment in Athens before giving birth.
“A few days after their birth, the children were sold to local traders who may have belonged to an international baby trafficking network,” the prosecutor’s office explained.
“Nine women, whose children were born and sold in Greece, have been identified.”
The infant trade, initially widespread in Roma ghettos in the Burgas region (east), has spread in recent years to other parts of Bulgaria, with a very attractive destination in neighboring Greece.
