The North American website specialized in cinema Indie Wire placed “Ghost Portraits” in Kleber Mendonca Son on the list of the 20 best films of 2024. Despite having arrived in Brazilian cinemas in 2023, the documentary premiered in the United States this year.
The film was shown at the Special Sessions section of the Cannes Film Festival last year. The film brings together seven years of work and research, filming and editing in the quest to get to know the center of Recife in the 20th century. The story is told from the movie theaters that moved the population of Recife and dictated behavior.
On social media, the filmmaker from Pernambuco celebrated the mention in Indie Wire: “Oh, pure beauty.”
