THE starlinka company that is a subdivision of SpaceX, the billionaire Elon Musk, released the price of its monthly satellite internet plan in Brazil. Interested parties will need to pay R$ 530 each month, but there is also an initial cost of transport and payment of equipment.
The shipping and handling of the so-called “Starlink Kit” is around R$365, while the kit costs R$2,670. In total, the value is a little more than R$ 3,000. The kit comes with an antenna, a Wi-Fi router, a power supply, cables and a base. You still need to pay the taxes about the product.
The company is not yet operating in Brazil, but has received authorization from the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) on January 28.
On its website, Starlink says it expects to start services between early and mid-2022. For now, it is possible to reserve the equipment for delivery. Order fulfillment is on a first-come, first-served basis.
The current plan offers a Internet with download speeds between 100 Mb/s (megabytes per second) and 200 Mb/s, and a latency – response time between command and realization – of up to 20 ms in most locations.
According to the company’s website, the payment is fully refundable, and some orders can take up to six months to be delivered. In addition to the kit, the company recommends installing an application from Starlink, which helps to determine the best place to install the antenna that will receive the internet.
Starlink provides internet from a low-orbit satellite system, a “constellation” of 4,000 satellites located about 550 kilometers from Earth.
Starlink’s internet, according to company information, works by sending information through the vacuum of space, where it travels faster than fiber optic cables, making it more accessible to more people and places.
As they are in low orbit, the time of sending and receiving data between the user and the satellite – the latency – is shorter than with satellites in geostationary orbit, according to the company.
In addition to the current plan available, Starlink also recently launched a “premium” plan, which features a larger, higher-throughput antenna with twice the capacity, according to the company.
US United Statesthe monthly price is US$500 (about R$2,600 at the current rate), with download speeds between 150 and 500 Mbps (megabits per second) and latency of 20 to 40 ms.
According to the company, “Starlink is ideally suited for areas where connectivity is unreliable or completely unavailable”, such as rural areas.
