Interpol in Brazil hits 60 arrests in 2021

With the arrest of an Ecuadorian couple in Corumbá, on the border between Mato Grosso do Sul and Bolivia, last Saturday (13th) Interpol agents beat the mark of 60 fugitives captured in national territory throughout 2021.

Interpol in Brazil is made up of a group of Federal Police agents and delegates. The work is divided into two main fronts: receiving requests for international cooperation from other countries and investigating reported crimes, ranging from drug trafficking, money laundering, human trafficking, cyber crimes and others; and transmitting the requests of the Brazilian police, including the publication of “red broadcasts”, the highest warning of the International Criminal Police Organization that limits the movement of the target, be it a Brazilian abroad or a foreign fugitive in Brazil.

When there is a suspicion that a fugitive could be in the country, the Federal Police initiates the tracing procedures and, once found, requests authorization from the Federal Supreme Court for his arrest and subsequent extradition.

Among the 60 fugitives arrested by the Federal Police in 2021 are drug traffickers, mafiosi and murderers, including Calabrian mafia member N’Drangheta Rocco Morabito, Colombian Medellín cartel trafficker Efe Sullivan Loaiza Durango and a sexual abuser from Uruguay.

The most recent arrest, of the Ecuadorian couple, was motivated by a homicide that took place in October. They are accused of having caused the death of a seven-year-old child, the daughter of an Ecuadorian woman, as a result of severe aggression that caused her head trauma.
