Peugeot has unveiled its latest hybrid hypercar, the Peugeot 9X8, which will compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans next year.
The Peugeot 9X8 hypercar is powered by a 2.6-liter V6 bi-turbo engine with 680 hp, which is part of the Peugeot HYBRID4 system, which also includes a 272 hp electric motor. The latter can act as a generator for charging a high-voltage (900 V) battery, which was developed by the French automaker in collaboration with another French company, Saft.
It is unclear how Peugeot will adjust the hypercar’s enormous total horsepower to comply with the championship rules, which allows cars with a maximum output of 680bhp.
Two Peugeot 9X8 hypercars will compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) in 2022, including the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans race with a total distance of 5,400 kilometers that the cars cover in a day. It is worth noting that Formula 1 cars cover almost the same distance for the entire season.
