The Swedish premium electric boat manufacturer Candela has unveiled the new Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil taxi.
Designed to replace traditional diesel-powered models, the 8.5-meter vehicle uses a combination of an electric motor, a carbon fiber-reinforced composite hull and hydrofoils. The panoramic-glazed cabin has space for 12 passengers.
The hydrofoil system chosen for the P-12 has already been tested on the luxury Candela C-7 pleasure boat. The patented proprietary control system ensures the smoothest ride possible, eliminating seasickness.
The advantages of the novelty include lower energy consumption, less noise, smoother movement and a significantly lower impact on the environment. The latter factor allows you to move at high speed in areas where conventional boats have to slow down in order not to harm wildlife.
The Candela P-12 can move at a speed of 30 knots (55 km / h) and has an autonomy of over 2 hours at a speed of 20 knots (37 km / h). A standard DC fast charger can fully charge the battery in just one hour.
Operating costs are cited as one of the big benefits of the new technology, Candela said. Candela estimates that the P-12 uses 80% less energy than conventional combustion-powered water taxis. This means that even in markets where fossil fuels are subsidized, the P-12 will be significantly cheaper to operate than comparable combustion-powered ships.
“With a petrol price of 0.6 Euros per liter, the P-12 will be about 85% cheaper to operate,” the manufacturer says, promising to start selling the P-12 by the end of 2022.
