Introduced THOR, a 5G emergency satellite drone truck

When Texas was hit by a severe cold snap earlier this year and the state’s independent power grid went down, many people couldn’t use their phones, didn’t have access to the Internet, and couldn’t get information about the situation as it evolved. Climate change is making these weather events more frequent and forcing operators to adapt.

Verizon yesterday unveiled a vehicle that will be used to provide emergency communications. The Tactical Humanitarian Operations Response (THOR) truck was based on the Ford F650.

In the front of the car there is a cab for the driver and five passengers, and in the “command center”, which is located in the back, there is room for three more people. THOR can quickly provide 5G coverage and satellite communications in any region.

Verizon expects THOR to assist first responders and the military “under virtually any conditions,” recalling the California wildfires, the Florida hurricane and other disasters from the past.

The THOR truck is also equipped with a drone that can be used for search and rescue operations and for collecting distress information.
