Shocking images make the rounds of the world from Ukraine. After Russian invasion Citizens are fleeing their country to escape and flee to Poland, with many arriving in the usually quiet passageway in the city of Medica σήμεραa today, carrying suitcases and being accompanied by their children.
Officials of European countries bordering on Ukraine -including Romania and Slovakia- have stated that there is not a large flow of refugees at the moment, but local media and eyewitnesses have stated that pedestrian traffic is increasing.
Alexander Bazanov left his home in eastern Ukraine with his wife and young child, taking what they could carry and crossing the last few kilometers to Poland by foot.
Bazanov, a 34-year-old man from Mariupol, 113 kilometers from Donetsk, decided to move to Poland when he was informed by a colleague that war had broken out.
“All I feel is great fear,” he said as he waited at a border crossing about 400km from Warsaw. “I will visit my father in Spain, but I do not have money and I do not know how I will manage it,” he said, according to the Athens News Agency.
The crossing to Medica is usually used by Ukrainians who go to Poland for shopping or work.
Today the queues of people waiting to enter this border town were growing, with some Ukrainians saying they were worried that Russia would invade their country deeply.
“Everyone believed that western Ukraine was safe because it was close to the EU and NATO countries,” said Maria Palis, 44, who arrived at the Polish border with her family and her brother’s family. “It does not seem to be safe enough,” he added.
News of the invasion prompted Olga Pavlusic and her boyfriend Bodhan Begay to rush to the Polish border, leaving their dog behind. They do not know where they will go.
“Wherever there is security, it is good”he stated.
Polish hospitals are preparing to receive the injured
Meanwhile, hospitals in Poland are preparing beds to receive injured people from Ukraine, the Polish Ministry of Health announced today.
“Poland is preparing to accept refugees from Ukraine, including Ukrainian citizens affected by the armed conflict,” the ministry said.
“We will do everything we can to ensure that everyone entering Poland has access to the health care system, including hospitals. “Beds are being prepared in hospitals for the transport of the wounded.”
