Invasion of Ukraine: Zelensky criticizes the West for simply watching from afar

The West was criticized by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, at a time when his country is living the nightmare of war. As he stated today, the ongoing Russian attack on his country shows that the sanctions imposed on Moscow by the West are not enough.

The head of state criticized the fact that he continues to simply watch what is happening in Ukraine from afar, a few hours after the new blows of the Russian forces in Kiev, in Zaporizhia and while air defense sirens sound in cities of western Ukraine, especially Lviv.

In his sermon to the nation, Mr. Zelensky reported that Russia resumed missile strikes around 04:00 (local time and Greek time), claiming that it targeted both military and political infrastructure.

The Ukrainian president also assured that his country’s forces stopped the advance of Russian troops on most fronts, as broadcast by Reuters and relayed by the Athens News Agency.

Biden briefs Democratic and Republican leaders by telephone

In the meantime, the president Joe Biden briefed congressional leaders on the Ukraine crisis during a telephone conversation on Thursday afternoon, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.

President Biden “took an hour to talk to Democratic and Republican leaders in Congress, briefing them on the situation, the situation on the ground, and answering questions they had,” Psaki said.

Australia: Targeted sanctions against Russia

Australia today imposed more sanctions on Russia. These are targeted sanctions against several citizens of the Russian elite, as well as members of the legislature.

Sydney also said it was “unacceptable” that China was easing trade restrictions imposed on Moscow.

“We will continue to work with our partners on a widespread wave of sanctions, continuing to escalate pressure on Russia,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison told a news conference.

At the same time, New Zealand imposed targeted travel restrictions on Russia by banning trade in goods with the country’s military and security forces.

“People are talking and sending a clear message to Russia that what they did was wrong and they will face global disapproval,” said Prime Minister Jacinta Arden.

More sanctions will follow as the war escalates, Ardern said.
