Amid the success of the documentary “The Tinder Scam”a Netflix launches this Friday (12) another production inspired by real blows and frames. But the schemes of the protagonist of the miniseries “Inventing Anna” thousands of dollars exceed those invested by the protagonist of that film.
Created by Shonda Rimes (“Bridgerton,” “Scandal”), the miniseries fictionalizes the story of Anna Delvey, who infiltrated New York’s most wealthy and fashionable social circles. Posing as a German socialite, the scammer tricked celebrities, investors and even banks.
Under the guise of waiting for her inheritance to be sent, she borrowed and asked for donations to create the Anna Delvey Foundation, an art and fashion institute. Anna managed to get her friends to pay for her expenses, such as dinners at starred restaurants and even a trip to Morocco. It is estimated that she owed hundreds of thousands of dollars in debts incurred in the name of other people.
When she was arrested in 2017, aged 26, it was revealed that Anna Delvey was actually Anna Sorokin, a young middle-class Russian woman who migrated to the US in search of fame and money. The curious character is played in the series by Julia Garner, known for the role of criminal Ruth Langmore in “Ozark” – a role that has already won her two Emmys.
The production follows the point of view of reporter Vivian Kent (Anna Chlumsky), who hears about the case and decides to follow Anna’s trial. The plot is inspired by the book “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People” by journalist Jessica Pressler.
To create the miniseries, however, Netflix also had to reach an agreement with Anna – released in 2021, after serving her sentence for embezzlement, but still in detention awaiting deportation to Europe. The streaming platform paid the scammer $320,000 for the exclusive rights to replay her life story; but the amount had to be reverted to the compensation of Anna’s victims.
