‘Inventing Anna’, the Netflix series you should watch if you got stung by ‘The Tinder Scammer’

The Tinder scammer has caused great controversy for showing how a man swindled several women out of millions of dollars, all under the promise of true love. However, this is not the only scammer who came to Netflix to cause a stir, as the protagonist of the new series Inventing Anna He doesn’t ask the guy from Tinder for anything.

The series is based on the true case of Anna Delvey, a “legendary heiress” who stole the hearts and wallets of New York’s elite and is now behind bars. Here we tell you more about it.

The series starring Julia Garner is based on the true story of Anna Sorokin, who posed as Anna Delvey, a German heiress who moved to New York and who with her charisma stole the love, hearts and money of various celebrities.

It should be noted that the series is not the first adaptation of this surprising story. Since Sorokin’s sentence in 2019, she has released a book written by her former friend Rachel Williams titled My Friend Anna. In addition, a series not yet released on HBO was filmed. However, unlike these adaptations, the Netflix project is not based on the article in the New York Times, How Anna (Sorokin) Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People by Jessica Pressler and will show the reality of Anna from the point of view of the journalist Vivian Kent.

To get a little more into the context of what you’ll see on screen, you should know that during her stay in New York, Anna Sorokin posed as a wealthy German heiress, infiltrated an exclusive circle of high society, and ingeniously he scammed countless people, hotels and banks, using fake credit cards. But that’s not all, as Anna even created a foundation in the name of her alter ego (Anna Delvey), a private club and an art foundation, which attracted various donors and sponsorships from major brands.

Her empire of wealth ended in 2017, when she was evicted from a luxurious hotel during a sting operation. On April 25, 2019, Anna was found guilty on eight counts: attempted robbery in the first degree, grand robbery in the second degree, grand robbery in the third degree, and theft of services. In May, she was sentenced to four to 12 years in state prison, a $24,000 fine, and $199,000 in restitution.

After this trial, Anna was sent to Bedford Hills prison, but in February 2021 she was released before serving her sentence and immediately returned to Instagram. A month later she was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement for overstaying her visa and she was returned behind bars, awaiting deportation back to Germany.

Now that you know what the series is about, you cannot miss any of its 11 chapters, because although they are few, each one of them is full of intrigue, scams, lies, drama and thousands of dollars that will be stolen.
