Investigation into the reason for the plane crash in South Korea could take years

The investigation into what caused the South Korean plane crash could take up to three years, the country’s Transport Ministry said in a statement.

Investigations into commercial flights can take between six months and three years, the statement said.

Given that the plane was manufactured outside of South Korea, investigators will need to consult with the manufacturers of the aircraft’s key parts, which could mean the investigation will take a long time, the agency concluded.

Worst plane crash in decades

Among the 181 people on board, at least 179 died in a plane crash in South Korea this Sunday (29), according to local fire and rescue authorities.

Two people survived, both crew members. This is the country’s worst air disaster in decades.

The Jeju Air plane was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members when it crash-landed at Muan County Airport. With the exception of two Thai citizens, everyone on board was South Korean.
