Io. Smyrlis: The strengthening of energy relations in the wider region is important

The importance of Greece’s participation in multilateral regional cooperation schemes for international peace and stability was highlighted by the Secretary of State for International Economic Relations and External Affairs and president of Enterprise Greece, Ioannis Smyrlis, in his speech, yesterday, Tuesday, July 5, at the 26th Economist Government Roundtable. in the section entitled “Strategic cooperation in turbulent times”.

Mr. Smyrlis spoke about the importance of strengthening energy relations in the wider region and about Greece’s ambition to become a gateway and energy transit hub that will connect Southeast Europe with the energy-rich region of the Middle East-North Africa, helping them the country’s close partners and neighbors in the EU in their efforts to diversify their energy resources and achieve energy security.

“In this spirit, we are actively promoting the internal connectivity of the Eastern Mediterranean gas fields with the European market,” he said.

Regarding the prospect of the Western Balkans joining the EU, Mr. Smyrlis noted: “We believe that it is very important to set a specific timetable in order to complete this process.”

“Greece’s proposal, as formulated by the prime minister a few days ago, is for this milestone to be in 2033, that is thirty years after the Thessaloniki Summit, when the way was opened for the integration of the Western Balkans into the European family “, he added.

Speaking about strengthening the connectivity of the wider region, the Minister of International Economic Relations and External Relations emphasized that Greece promotes the view that the expansion of the “Green Lanes” initiative between the Western Balkans and the neighboring EU member states could serve as key tool for trade facilitation and gradual institutional alignment with the EU.

Finally, Mr. Smyrlis underlined that Greece is open to cooperation with Turkey and all the countries of the region, as long as it is done with respect to International Law and the Law of the Sea.
