The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Tuesday (7) that it respects the decision of the United States government of a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.
“We always ask for as much respect as possible and as little interference as possible from the political world,” said Juan Antonio Samaranch, head of the IOC coordination committee for the Beijing Winter Olympics. “We have to be reciprocal. We respect the decisions of Organs political bodies”, he added.
The White House said on Monday that US government officials would boycott the Winter Olympics because of “atrocities” against human rights in China, although US athletes are free to travel there and compete .
China responded hours later, calling the boycott “pretentious” and “political manipulation”, and that it will not impact the realization of the Games.
