IOHK to implement blockchain in Ethiopia’s education system

Blockchain developer Cardano IOHK announced the start of cooperation with the government of Ethiopia. The IOHK Atala PRISM solution will be used to digitize the country’s education system.

The company will provide the Ethiopian government with a decentralized identification solution, Atala PRISM, which will be used to register and monitor the grades of five million local students in 3,500 schools. The main goal of the initiative is to reduce the number of bogus applications for admission to universities and to check the correctness of students’ grades without the participation of intermediaries.

Greater transparency in the grading process could increase social mobility and improve employment opportunities for rural Ethiopians. Commenting on the scale of Atala PRISM, IOHK developer John O’Connor stated that the Cardano blockchain has become “mature enough” to serve an entire nation:

“Transforming the education system with blockchain in Ethiopia was a key milestone in IOHK’s mission to provide social and financial services to people without digital access. After five years of research and development, the Cardano blockchain is mature enough to support a solution that can scale to serve the entire population of the country. ”

IOHK plans to continue working with the Ethiopian government to make changes in other sectors, from agriculture to healthcare. Ultimately, the company wants to help the African country achieve below-average income by 2025. Recall that back in 2018, the Ethiopian government announced that it would implement the Cardano blockchain in agriculture.
